So, you can be sure that asbestosis is not a type of cancer. It is a type of severe lung disease that can lead to a few types of cancer, but only in specific circumstances. Asbestos particles are very tricky to test, even for professionals, because they tend to be very different from one sample to the other, which is why there are no cures available for several of the diseases they can cause.
Asbestosis and lung cancer
Asbestosis can also be linked to lung cancer, some experts stating that this would be the normal evolution of diseases caused by asbestos. First comes asbestosis, and after a while, lung cancer or mesothelioma are very possible to appear.
Statistics show that more and more asbestosis victims develop other disorders while being treated for the first one. This is because, even if the fibers cause a disease already, they are still very active and experts have not been able to come up with a way to render these fibers harmless to people yet. Here are some other statistics concerning the subject:
- Shortness of breath is the most common symptom between asbestos related diseases, including mesothelioma and asbestosis
- Percentage of people who survived more than 5 years with asbestosis disease or one of the cancer types caused by the mineral are 15 to 20 percent of all patients
- In 12 percent of asbestosis cases the patient develops a series of other severe diseases, including lung cancer
