Asbestosis is a disease caused by asbestos exposure, and one very common aspect of it is that it exhibits symptoms similar to many other diseases that have nothing to do with asbestos or asbestosis. This makes asbestosis very difficult to diagnose in the first few days or weeks from the beginning of the disease.
Asbestosis chest x-ray
One of the most commonly used asbestosis diagnosis techniques are x-rays. This is a very simple technique and will not expose the patient to any unnecessary harm during the procedure. The patient is set in front of a high frequency radiation machine and a “picture” of the chest is taken within seconds.
Asbestosis x-ray will not provide with the clearest image, but in most cases it proves enough for the doctor to diagnose the asbestosis disease. There are several types of x-rays, depending on the type of disease or condition that needs to be diagnosed, as follows:
- Pleural effusion x-ray
- Pulmonary x-ray
- Infection x-ray
- COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) x-ray
- Cancer x-ray
- Bilateral x-ray (performed from different angles, only if needed to determine where the disease is placed)
- Asthma x-ray
- X-ray of the lungs
As you can see, x-rays are used for a variety of diseases, making this technique the most common of all imaging techniques, surpassing even CT scans.
X-ray accuracy and detail
The latest hardware developed for x-rays provides with more details than previous versions did, but still it can’t be compared with other, more sophisticated techniques. Anatomy x-ray has been used for several decades and has been perfect for determining where fractured bones were and in what way they should be mended. It is a different story when doctors try to x-ray soft tissue, such as lungs, heart or other internal organs.
Abdonormal x-ray images that cannot be read very well by professionals will need to be assisted by CT or MRI scans in order to confirm a diagnosis. Lung cancer and asbestos fibers should appear very clear on any x-ray, but in some specific cases that will not occur. Lung cancer and asbestosis progression can be tracked only by the use of x-rays if the doctor decides so.
Asbestosis therapy and treatment can only be started after a complete diagnosis is performed, and can not be done without an imaging techniques’ help.
