Mesothelioma is a type of cancer that could be easily avoided in most cases, because it is an occupational disease. Most of the victims didn’t know that asbestos exposure is such a dangerous mineral to work with, and thus did not use any kind of protective methods. Victims of asbestos products weren’t aware of the dangers either, until after was already too late.

Mesothelioma awareness day

After hearing the stories of several asbestos and lung cancer patients, some officials in the United States government determined the fact that asbestos exposure was only causing the damage to the individual, but lack of information was the main cause of mesothelioma cancer all along; and asbestos diseases too.

This has lead to the establishing of a national mesothelioma awareness day, seeking to reach several goals:

  • Together with OSHA, EPA and ADAO, they plan to make people aware of the dangers of asbestos
  • Present treatment options and diagnosis procedures available for malignant mesothelioma, clinical trials and basic mesothelioma statistics
  • Also known as an asbestos awareness day, it will help people avoid asbestos
  • Bracelets, ribbons and bands are distributed to people in jobsites that use asbestos one way or the other, reminding them each day to prevent asbestos exposure
  • Navy veterans that have been exposed to asbestos are part of the meetings and will say a few words about it and how it can be avoided

Basically, the goal of an asbestos or mesothelioma awareness day is that of letting everyone know of the dangers.

Asbestos awareness centers

There are several centers in the United States that have been starting to organize asbestos awareness programs along the time in order to make asbestos victims aware of the dangers. These awareness centers can help you find suitable protective equipment if your job requires you to handle and work with asbestos regularly.

Can I join?

You can join a mesothelioma awareness day and help spread the word. If you want to do more for asbestos and mesothelioma victims, there is some training required, but it is straight forward and will allow communicating easier with every one around you. This course will also help you gather useful information about these diseases.

In some parts of the country you might be able to find asbestos programs that you can join in order to help the mesothelioma community. You can explain to people how best to remove asbestos during construction, renovation or insulation process of future homes. This will be seen as voluntary work, and payment should not be one of your goals. Knowing that you helped several people prevent a deadly disease would be great.

Do not hesitate to contact asbestosis and mesothelioma centers should you require any kind of further information. It is completely free.
