What is mesothelioma cancer?
Mesothelioma cancer is known to be a very rare form of the disease, with doctors diagnosing 5000 cases each year in the United States. Cancer, in general, manifests itself in the form of malignant cells growing uncontrolled in a certain area of the body; in this case, mesothelioma cancer affects the mesothelium. This is a sac found in the chest area that contains most of the vital organs. Mesothelioma cancer starts there, most of the times and if left untreated, it rapidly spreads to other organs.
Forms of mesothelioma cancer
Mesothelioma cancer develops in different ways from patient to patient. The types of mesothelioma cancer are the following:
- peritoneal mesothelioma(mesothelioma malignant cells affect the abdominal area)
- pericardial mesothelioma (malignant cells affect the heart and the surrounding area)
- pleural mesothelioma (common type, mesothelioma affects the lungs)
Mesothelioma cancer is mainly caused by exposure to asbestos, which is a natural mineral, found under the form of fibres. These fibers, when inhaled or
swallowed, are the main cause of mesothelioma cancer. The risk of getting in contact with asbestos is higher when working as a construction worker or plumber, because it is known that they use materials and tools that contain asbestos. If you are working with such materials it is best that you use masks or similar equipment that will stop the tiny asbestos fibers travelling to your lungs or stomach. Mesothelioma only starts to show itself after a period of at least 10 years after the initial contact with asbestos. It can take up to 50 years or even more for mesothelioma cancer symptoms to appear.
Stages of mesothelioma cancer
There are four stages of mesothelioma cancer:
- 1st stage – mesothelioma cancer is to be found on only one side of the chest and it isn't yet spreading to other organs
- 2nd stage – starts spreading to other organs
- 3rd stage – mesothelioma cancer has reached the peritoneum (lining of the chest wall) and it is already spreading rapidly throughout the rest of the body, being able to even reach the heart
- 4th and final stage – mesothelioma cancer reaches the bloodstream, and is now spreading to all organs
