Mesothelioma is a rare form of lung cancer which appears in about 3500 people each year. It is usually caused by asbestos exposure, and workers that are near asbestos and asbestos fibers have the biggest chances of getting infected. A common insulation method involves the use of asbestos, so be careful when working with it. Vermiculite is also present in some insulation materials, and it can contain harmful agents, that also cause lung cancer or mesothelioma.
Asbestos particles travel into the air and workers inhale them. After that the small particles get trapped in the lungs and slowly start to infect cells and tissue, until it turns into cancer. Mesothelioma death rates are highest between asbestos workers, because they are most exposed to it.

Only a few patients each year are recorded to have died, infected with mesothelioma, and were not part of the above mentioned groups. Most exposure cases happen at home, because of the insulation materials used, or because of a near factory that uses asbestos in its’ manufacturing process.
