Malignant mesothelioma is a cancerous disease that is caused by prolonged exposure to a natural mineral called asbestos. The tiny asbestos fibers implant themselves into fragile tissue such as the abdomen or chest lining and act like needles in the area, allowing cancer cells to appear. From there, cancer cells are able to develop tumors and spread to other organs in the patients’ body, such as the lungs or heart.
Malignant mesothelioma treatment
Mesothelioma patients, regardless of the stage of malignant mesothelioma, have several treatment options available:
- Mesothelioma surgery (several types of surgery, each with its’ specific purpose)
- Mesothelioma chemotherapy (chemotherapy drugs are usually combined for better results)
- Mesothelioma radiation therapy (internal or external)
- Alternative Medicine (not providing with a cure, alternative medicine is mostly used to lessen side effects, reduce pain and relieve symptomatic discomfort)
Malignant mesothelioma treatment process
First of all, a set of diagnostic tools are used in order to provide with a correct and accurate diagnosis. This includes:
- Clinical trials
- X-rays
- Biopsies (cancer cells, red blood cells and tissue are studied under a microscope)
After all these tests the form of mesothelioma should be clear, and mesothelioma doctors will be able to choose the appropriate treatment methods. There is also another condition associated with malignant mesothelioma called pleural effusion, essentially, the build up of fluid in the chest area that causes a lot of pain and discomfort for the patient. This can be treated by the means of a simple, non invasive surgical procedure.
The disease is not yet curable, unfortunately, although patients diagnosed with malignant mesothelioma have been known to live very long after the diagnosis. Doctors are developing new ways of treating malignant mesothelioma, combining available drugs and treatment methods in order to achieve better and better and better results with each patient. Malignant mesothelioma treatment is also made difficult by the fact that each patient reacts in a different way to treatment, a treatment method that worked well for one patient, might be not as effective with the next. New treatment methods and drugs promise to take malignant mesothelioma treatment one step closer to a cure.
