Earlier detection of mesothelioma cancer could be possible, after testing conducted by an Oxford University research team. This test will allow mesothelioma doctors to treat diseases at an earlier stage, when the virus or affected tissues more vulnerable. Doctors are hoping to increase mesothelioma life expectancy due to this test.
This research team discovered that mesothelioma patients had a higher concentration of meothelin, almost six times higher compared to normal, healthy people. The test subject, almost 200 hundred, also had a meothelin count over 10 times higher than people suffering from other types of cancer. The present cancer testing procedure is not very accurate, and does not provide with usable results.
The condition this test is looking for by testing protein around the lungs is not present in all mesothelioma patients, only in ninety percent of them. This condition causes the patient to have trouble breathing.
Mesothelioma is one very rare type of cancer, one of the rarest. It is caused by asbestos exposure, and it remains latent for several decades until the first mesothelioma symptoms start to be felt by the victim. It can only be treated with specific treatment techniques, but in most cases it cannot be cured, unless discovered before it even starts as a disease.
The largest problem with this type of disease is that the symptoms showed by patients are very similar to a lot of other medical condition that have nothing to do with asbestos. Properly detecting and diagnosing mesothelioma is very difficult and mandatory in order to start appropriate treatment.
The early detection should help patients receive mesothelioma treatment sooner. This, experts hope, will increase the number of people surviving mesothelioma
