Small risk of asbestos exposure at the University of Wyoming

At the University of Wyoming, contaminated materials have been removed from two buildings by o team of professionals. The consultatant of the university said that this operation didn’t present a major health risk and it could have been avoided.

One of the people from IHI Environmental, in Salt Lake City, named Kenneth White, did an evaluation of the potential risk, health risks, of the asbestos presence in the insulation used in the manufacturing of the building, and which remained in the ground even after the building was removed. He is the author of a complete study regarding the potential health risk form the asbestos presence.

He also wrote in his report, dated on 11 November, that the area nears the Bureau of Mines Building, which remained closed for the public in the time, that the two buildings were removed. The asbestos presence was notified in the early June, and the removal action happened in the march-April interval.

In his report he is also talking about the nonpresence of the public around the blocked off area, not even at 15 feet closer to the asbestos presence place. Materials containing asbestos weren’t stirred up by any vehicle.

He is also pointing that the presence of the asbestos on the ground was not more then 99 days, 99 snowy and rainy days, and he is also suggesting that maybe the cold and wet weather could helped the asbestos materials not becoming airborne and spread in to the atmosphere.

White also wrote: “Wetting of the asbestos materials can greatly reduce asbestos fiber release and that this is a standard and required method used in asbestos removal. Even if asbestos exposure has occurred it had been at low levels and it couldn’t harm as much as developing asbestos cancer and mesothelioma”.

White is also talking about the buyer of the building, lawyer Mason Skiles, and the way that they have assured the proper removal for the asbestos materials. Some documents obtained form the University was showing that the third-party purchaser didn’t took the right steps to determine if the materials are containing dangerous asbestos minerals.
