ALIMTA for mesothelioma is a new chemotherapy antifolate drug developed recently, that is more efficient in killing non-small cancer cells and shrinking tumors. Also called pemetrexed disodium, it is still undergoing clinical trials and testing to prove its' effectiveness. Despite being in its' testing phase, it received approval from the Food and Drug Administration of the United States (FDA).
ALIMTA can also be used together with cisplatin, a platin based drug that is also new, but passed testing and is available for chemotherapy use. This combination is very effective against lung cancer and has less side effects compared to other chemotherapy drugs.
ALIMTA has been mostly tested against NSCLC (non-small cells lung cancer) and proved its' efficiency in a number of cases, but the main advantage of the drug is that some insurance companies stated that they will cover at least half of the ALIMTA treatment cost. ALIMTA for mesothelioma cancer has also been tested against Malignant Pleural Mesothelioma (MPM) with positive results that provide patients and doctors alike with a glimpse of hope.
Advantages of ALIMTA
ALIMTA is different in many ways compared to former mesothelioma chemotherapy drugs:
- treatment is performed at home, the patient only needs to travel to the mesothelioma cancer treatment center so that the drug is administered, there is no need to keep the patient there
- side effects are significantly less during the treatment period, and they disappear completely when treatment has ended
- even if it is a new drug, experts are certain that it will be more affordable compared to other similar drugs
- it will probably be covered by insurance
ALIMTA pemetrexed treats cancer in a new and more effective way, and that is why most doctors recommend that if a patient has the opportunity to try ALIMTA, they should not turn it down. Side effects will be almost inexistent, the cost is lower, recovery is also faster and easier on the patient, and it is certain to be one of the first drugs in a long series that will eventually lead to a cure.
Insurance isn't clear yet about ALIMTA, and if they will cover it or not, but there is a chance that it will be covered at least partially by insurance. Patients are certain to receive compensation for the recovery costs.
